Understanding LTL Freight Accessorials: Liftgate, Residential Delivery & Notification Fees

What each accessorial charge is, when it applies, and how to disclose your delivery conditions accurately so the quote you accept is the invoice you pay.

Key takeaways

  • Β· Accessorials are billed on top of base freight and are the main reason a final invoice exceeds a quote.
  • Β· Undisclosed conditions are rebilled after delivery β€” disclosure is cheaper than a correction.
  • Β· A commercial address with a dock avoids most accessorials entirely.
  • Β· Liftgate gets the pallet to the ground; it does not move it anywhere.

What an accessorial actually is

LTL base freight covers a straightforward pickup and delivery between two commercial locations with docks. Anything that requires additional equipment, time, or handling is billed separately as an accessorial charge.

Carriers are not adding these fees arbitrarily. Each one covers a real cost: a specialised trailer, a driver waiting, a second attempt, or a route into a location a 53' trailer cannot easily reach.

Liftgate service

A liftgate is a hydraulic platform on the back of the trailer that lowers a pallet to ground level. You need it whenever the delivery point has no dock and no forklift.

Two limits catch buyers out. First, the liftgate lowers the pallet but does not move it β€” you still need a pallet jack and a hard, level surface to get it inside. Second, liftgates have weight limits, and very heavy pallets may be refused. Gravel driveways, steep approaches, and soft ground frequently make liftgate delivery impossible.

Residential and limited-access delivery

Residential delivery applies to a home address β€” including a home-based business β€” and reflects the smaller equipment and slower routing required. Limited-access delivery covers locations such as schools, churches, farms, construction sites, storage facilities, and military bases.

Carriers classify the address, not your description of it. A business operating from a residential property is normally billed as residential regardless of how it is registered.

Notification, appointment, and inside delivery

A notification or call-ahead fee covers the carrier phoning before delivery. An appointment fee covers scheduling a specific window. Both are worth paying when someone must be present to receive and inspect the shipment.

Inside delivery β€” moving goods past the threshold β€” is a separate and more expensive service. Most liquidation buyers do not need it, but it matters for retail storefronts without a rear entrance.

Charges that arise after the fact

Redelivery is billed when the first attempt fails because nobody was available. Storage accrues when a shipment sits at the terminal. Detention applies when unloading exceeds the free window. Reconsignment covers changing the delivery address mid-transit.

Reweigh and reclass adjustments happen when the actual weight or freight class differs from what was quoted. Accurate weight and dimensions at quote time are the simplest way to avoid them.

How to keep your invoice matching your quote

Disclose everything at quote time: address type, dock or no dock, forklift or no forklift, access restrictions, and whether an appointment is needed. Every accessorial declared up front is quoted; every one discovered by the driver is rebilled, usually at a worse rate.

Where possible, ship to a commercial address with a dock, such as a partner warehouse or co-op space. Facility Warehouse Pickup by Approved Appointment Only can avoid carrier accessorials but requires 24–48 hour advance scheduling and confirmation; no walk-ins.

Frequently asked questions

+Do I need a liftgate?

Yes, if you have no loading dock and no forklift. The driver cannot lower a 1,000 lb pallet by hand. You will still need a pallet jack and a level surface to move it after it reaches the ground.

+Why am I being charged residential when I run a business?

Carriers classify by address type. A business operating from a home address is normally billed at the residential rate regardless of registration.

+Can I avoid accessorials entirely?

Often, by taking delivery at a commercial address with a dock. Facility Warehouse Pickup by Approved Appointment Only can remove carrier accessorials, but requires 24–48 hour advance scheduling and confirmation; no walk-ins.

+What happens if I am not there when the truck arrives?

The shipment goes back to the terminal and you pay a redelivery fee, plus storage if it sits. Paying a notification or appointment fee up front is almost always cheaper.

+What is a reweigh or reclass charge?

An adjustment applied when the shipment's actual weight or freight class differs from the quoted figures. Accurate dimensions and weight at quote time prevent it.

+Are accessorials included in a freight quote from a listing?

They are quoted alongside the base rate when you declare them. Request your quote with the delivery conditions stated accurately and the total you see is the total you should pay.
