Are Liquidation Pallets Worth It? An Honest Cost Breakdown

What a liquidation pallet really costs once freight and labour are counted, when the maths works, and when it does not.

Key takeaways

  • · Price the pallet delivered and sorted, not at its listed price.
  • · Buy categories you already know how to sell.
  • · Manifested lots cost more per unit and remove most of the guesswork.
  • · More pallets lowers freight per unit; over four pallets ships free.
  • · Estimated retail value is a reference figure, never a profit forecast.

The short answer

A liquidation pallet is worth buying when you already have a sales channel, space to sort, and the time to process goods item by item. It is rarely worth buying as a way to find out whether you enjoy reselling, because the labour arrives all at once and the money goes out before any of it comes back.

Nobody can promise you a profit on a pallet, and any supplier who does is selling you a story rather than inventory. What a good listing gives you instead is verifiable facts: condition grade, unit count, pallet count, manifest availability and shipping point.

Count the full cost, not the sticker price

Your real cost is the lot price, plus freight to your address, plus any accessorial such as liftgate or residential delivery, plus the hours you spend unloading, sorting, testing, cleaning, photographing and listing.

Divide that total by the units you realistically expect to sell, not by the total unit count on the manifest. Damaged, incomplete and unsellable items exist in every returns lot and belong in your maths from the start.

When the numbers tend to work

Manifested lots suit buyers who need to know what is coming before they commit. You pay a little more per unit and you remove most of the guesswork.

Higher pallet counts lower your freight per unit, and orders of more than four pallets ship free, which is why a single test pallet often looks worse on paper than a larger buy.

Categories you already know sell faster. A tool reseller buying tools will outperform the same person buying apparel, regardless of the discount.

When to walk away

Walk away when there is no manifest and no description detailed enough to price the risk, when you have nowhere to put the goods, or when the freight quote pushes the landed cost past what your channel supports.

Walk away from any listing that quotes a guaranteed return. Estimated retail value is a reference figure supplied with the lot — it is not a forecast of what you will sell it for.

Frequently asked questions

+How much should a first pallet cost?

Set a ceiling you can absorb if the lot underperforms, then shop within it. Landed cost, not the listed price, is the figure to cap.

+Can I see what is in the lot before buying?

Manifested lots publish an item-level list you can download from the lot page. Unmanifested lots are described by category, condition and quantity only, and are priced lower for that reason.

+How long does it take to process a pallet?

It depends entirely on unit count and category. A few hundred small apparel units takes far longer to list than a pallet of boxed tools.
